Behaviors drive results. And, helping clients achieve their goals often lies in changing the little things they do on a daily basis, whether they are conscious or unconscious to those actions.
The Charlotte Book Club will be exploring Atomic Habits by James Clear to uncover tools to help our clients realize the lasting change they want and deserve.
Atomic habits are small changes--the size of atoms--that you make in your work or personal life. Atomic Habits teaches that success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations. Even a 1 percent change, when practiced consistently, will lead to improvements. Just as atoms are the building blocks of molecules, atomic habits are the building blocks of remarkable results.
Researchers estimate 40 to 50 percent of our actions on any given day are done out of habit. Changing our habits is challenging for two reasons. First, we often try to change the wrong thing. Second, we try to change our habits in the wrong way.
In addition, people confuse outcomes with action. Every action is a vote for the type of person you want to become. Decide the person you wish to become and prove it to yourself with small wins. If you wish to master a habit, start with repetition, not perfection.
